5 Lessons To Teach Your Daughter, From A Buddhist Mother

As a mother of a daughter, I get to relive certain aspects of my childhood as I am riding the roller coaster of emotions with my daughter, now like my mother had done with me

I see a lot of myself in her — a lot of things I had to endure and lessons that broke me at the time they were being taught. It has made me think of the top five lessons I want to pass on to her.

She knows her mother is a Buddhist, we have some great talks about Buddha and what mommy believes in.

As a parent you are a role model to your children. You set examples and teach lessons through your actions.

You might not even be aware of what you are teaching to your little ones, but you are the biggest role model to them and you are setting examples of how to handle life situations they will carry on as adults.

Here are the top 5 lessons I hope my daughter to learns from her Buddhist mother

1. REMEMBER TO TREAT EVERYONE WITH KINDNESS AND COMPASSION REGARDLESS OF HOW THEY TREAT YOU.

The world is full of different and at times difficult people, take into consideration that the person you are dealing with might not be having a good day and taking their frustrations on out you, it’s nothing personal. If you are able to help someone in need regardless of how small it may seem, it is still a sign of compassion for those around you.

2. LOVE EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING WITH ALL OF YOU, BUT MOST OF ALL LOVE YOURSELF.

As a woman this is a harder one. Those of us who are older in age understand how hard we are on our younger selves and how harmful we can be. If you want to love someone, give them all of you and truly love them, you have to love yourself first. If we can not accept ourselves and love ourselves, we are not able to give pure love to any other being. Acceptance of our flaws and learning to embrace them is a tough one and only comes through wisdom and self acceptance.

As a mother this a very import lesson and role to remember, for our self hate that is expressed through our critiquing of ourselves is setting an example of how to ridicule our self and others.

3. LIFE IS TOO SHORT NOT TO BE HAPPY.

Find the happiness in your daily life and that is all around you. As a Buddhist when we learn to laugh at ourselves and the things in life we cannot change, we tend to smile a little more. When you accept the things about yourself that you can not change and decide to love yourself, you are creating an inner peace and happiness that allows the river of happiness to flow within you and then spilling over outside of you to everything around you.

You only have so much time in this life, spend that time being and sharing happiness

4. TOMORROW’S ARE THE PRODUCTS OF TODAY’S, YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW.

Every action has a reaction, good or bad. This is a simply theory, but yet so powerful. Everything you do today will catch up to you whether it’s tomorrow or years from now, never forget that you only benefit from the seeds you plant — good or bad — it is your choice to make.

5. I LOVE YOU IN THIS LIFE AND EVERY LIFE HERE AFTER; REMEMBER NOT TO GRIEVE WHEN I AM GONE, BECAUSE I AM ALL AROUND YOU AND WILL SEE YOU AGAIN.

One of our main beliefs in Buddhism is reincarnation. We will keep being reborn till all our karma is cleared. As a mother, I will never leave you, I will simply transform into something new, always remember I am here for you no matter what or where you are.

You are my baby.
