ZEN

Zen is not a religion, a doctrine or an intellectual point of view. Zen is also not a philosophical foundation with the systems of logical reasoning characterized by the subjectivity of the brain; nor a branch of science with structural programs and complicated equipments.

Zen is just a word use temporarily to show a state of mind that is permanent, constant, and transcending through time and space – Empty. The nature of Zen is beyond all pairs of contradictory and conflicting categories that belong to the subjective rationalism of our reasoning mind. We can achieve this state by experiencing spiritually with our own True Mind, and not through logical reasoning of the brain. This is the work of a Buddhist practical experience and not the logical reasoning of philosophy.  The term Zen itself is also just a completely empty name; it doesn’t relate to the quiescent, tranquil, and calm state of mind, an absolute freedom from the heart and mind. This state of mind is formless and nameless; Therefore, from its very nature, it is completely absent from any form and appearance such as name, word, and thought or mental cognition of the environment. It is absolutely equal to all things.

Therefore, we have to listen once again to the very inner most of our mind like it presently is; forget all the self words and self sounds of our flowing consciousness; and forget all the curiosities and inquiries of the misleading mind.

Just like a finger pointing to the moon, all the teachings from sutras can only be temporarily used to describe the unchangeable truth of our own True Mind. Therefore, let’s forget them (all the teachings from sutras) after we have completely experienced the reality.

Do not ever let sutras and dharma teachings mislead us with their beautiful and eloquent writing styles, or become a place to imprison our absolute freedom and complete tranquility state of mind.

Practice Zen Meditation requires us to have a high and constant intuitive mind, just like a cat ambushing a mouse, it never let go of its focus until it catches its prey. And once we become enlightened or experiencing the awakening state of mind with a complete tranquility and transcending time and space – or empty, then the awakening itself will shine and guide us in all activities of our lives. Because of this awakening that we intuitively realizing that the tranquil state of mind and this absolute peace is Nirvana, and is also Zen. Therefore, Zen has no beginning and ending.

On the contrary, when we haven’t achieved the enlightenment, haven’t recognized the true nature of quiescence and tranquility right within us, then it means that we are not really practicing Zen Meditation, not knowing what Zen really is and still standing outside the door of Zen. No matter how clever and smart all our behaviors and actions are, they are just merely a careful consideration and calculation of our consciousness (mind); and hence, cannot avoid the clumsy and foolish mistakes leading to the conflicts. Once we have awakened and achieved the perfect freedom and absolute peace of our True Mind (Buddha-nature), then our lives will become more and abundantly meaningful and all our actions are always being shined and lighted upon. A freshly new view about the humanity and universe is opened; seeing life is no longer a sea of sufferings but a miraculous, lively, and sparkling picture, and a wonderful symphony. We will not be looking at life with desolate eyes, but with the equal, fully, and true-loving eyes.

Whenever door of Zen is widely opened, the Master will step back. At this time, the practitioner himself will be walking alone on the path to liberation with no one intervenes him anymore. However, there are still battles, but even if he has to fight, he would still be clearly lighted by his inner mindful consciousness; and would never be lost because he have once experienced the awakening state of the natural peace and tranquility of his own True Mind (Buddha-Nature).

Once inside the door of Zen, we will become a new person with new point of view, which means living equally and harmoniously with the Absolute Truth. The enlightenment is not necessarily triggered by the teaching of a Dharma Master, but can sometime simply be the singing sound of flowing water in the creek, a light breeze, a leaf falling off from its branch, or a cracking sound of a dry tree’s branch. At that time, a practitioner is like a man in deep sleep suddenly awake, and immediately escapes from his long and continuous dream. The practitioner has become enlightened and experienced the Absolute Truth. He has recognized his free, lively, and permanent state of mind within him, that is his True Self is the Universe, the Universe is his True Self. At that very awakening moment, the practitioner no longer fights in battles and has already rested peacefully and completely within his own absolute tranquility and freedom state of mind. A favorable opportunity for a total transformation has happened, allowing the state of mind to unify fully with the universe.

Thus, before the starting of a long journey, the practitioner already has a map and a compass in his hands. The practitioner already recognized the path and the destination. The practitioner already has experienced the digging and beating of his own mind with many expedient means and is now too tired because of those means. The practitioner already intuitively recognized the foolishness in the indifference using those expedient means to harm his heart and mind. Right now, the practitioner has awakened to cross the river without staying attach to any bridge, despite how new, modern and beautiful that bridge really is. Now, the practitioner has nothing else to do and to say even just a word. The lively Absolute Nature encompasses all existents with a magnificent and realistic wisdom. The Truth (Reality) is manifesting and existing in each of us like the breath with space, like the sky holding plenty of marvelous stars and moon. The practitioner has self-experienced the Truth with his original and peaceful mind and not through the intermediary of any constant, flowing, and discriminate mind (misleading mind); hence, no longer misled by any delusions and worldly knowledge.
