Contemplation of the Tree of Assembled Gurus (composed by the Tibetan First Panchen): Quán tưởng Tông Chi Chư Tổ và Đức Bổn Sư (được Ban Thiền Lạt Ma đời thứ nhất biên soạn).

1) In the vast space of indivisible bliss and void, admist billowing clouds of Samantabhadra offerings, at the crest of a wish-granting tree embellished with leaves, flowers and fruits, is a lion-throne ablaze with precious gems on which is a lotus, sun and full moon: Trong bầu trời rộng lớn của Tánh Không và Hỷ Lạc bất khả phân giữa biển mây cuồn cuộn phẩm vật cúng dường Phổ Hiền Vương Bồ Tát. Trên đỉnh ngọn Như Ý tráng lệ đầy hoa, lá và quả, là bảo tòa sư tử tỏa rạng, dát đầy ngọc quý.

2) There sit my root Guru, kind in all three ways, in essence all Buddhas in aspect a saffron-robed monk, with one face, two arms and a radiant white smile. Your right hand is in the gesture of expounding the Dharma; your left in meditative pose holds a begging bowl full of nectar. You wear three lustrous saffron robes and your head is graced by a golden pandit’s hat: Trên bồ đoàn hoa sen với vầng nhật nguyệt tròn đầy, Đức Bổn Sư an tọa, với lòng hảo tâm từ bi trọn vẹn ba phương diện, là tinh túy của chư Phật, người mặc áo tỳ kheo màu vàng thị hiện với một gương mặt, hai tay và nụ cười tỏa rạng đầy đức hạnh. Bàn tay phải bắt ấn thuyết pháp, bàn tay trái bắt ấn nhập định và mang bình bát đựng đầy nước Cam Lộ. Người mặc ba thứ pháp y màu vàng rực rỡ, đội mũ pandit: mũ hiền trí màu vàng thanh nhã.

3) In your heart sits the all pervading Lord Vajradhara, with a blue body one face, two arms, holding vajra and bell and embracing Vajradhatu Ishvari. You delight in the play of simultaneous bliss and void, are adorned with jewelled ornaments of many designs and clothed in garments of heavenly silks: Trong tâm người là Đức Phật Kim Cang Trì toàn diện thị hiện thân xanh sẫm, một mặt và hai tay.

4) Radiant with thousands of light rays, adorned with the major and minor signs. You sit in the vajra position enhaloed by the five coloured rainbow. Totally pure, your aggregate factors are the five Blissfully. Your pure skandhas are the five Sugatas; your five elements the four consorts. Your sense spheres, energy channels, sinews and joints are all actually Bodhisattvas. The hair of your pores are 21,000 Arhants. Your limbs the wrathful protectors; the light rays directional guardians, lords of wealth and their attendants, while all worldly gods are cushions for your feet: Tỏa rạng với ngàn ánh sáng.

5) Surrounding you in their respective order sit the direct and lineage Gurus. Yidams, host of mandala deities, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, heroes and dakinis encircled by an ocean of Dharma protectors: Chung quanh đức Bổn Sư sắp theo thứ tự là biển chư Thầy.

Contemplation of all things as void or immaterial: Quán không.

Contemplation of thought: Quán Tâm—According to the Siksasamuccaya Sutra, the Buddha taught: “Cultivator searches all around for this thought. But what thought? Is it the passionate, hateful or confused one? Or is it the past, future, or present one? The past one no longer exists, the future one has not yet arrived, and the present one has no stability. For thought, Kasyapa, cannot be apprehended, inside, or outside, or in between. For thought is immaterial, invisible, nonresisting, inconceivable, unsupported, and non-residing. Thought has never been seen by any of the Buddhas, nor do they see it, nor will they see it. And what the Buddhas never see, how can that be observable process, except in the sense that dharmas proceed by the way of mistaken perception? Thought is like a magical illusion; by an imagination of what is actually unreal it takes hold of a manifold variety of rebirths. A thought is like the stream of a river, without any staying power; as soon as it is produced it breaks up and disappears. A thought is like a flame of a lamp, and it proceeds through causes and conditions. A thought is like lightning, it breaks up in a moment and does not stay on… Searching thought all around, cultivator does not see it in the skandhas, or in the elements, or in the sense-fields. Unable to see thought, he seeks to find the trend of thought, and asks himself: “Whence is the genesis of thought?” And it occurs to him that “where is an object, there thought arises.” Is then the thought one thing and the object another? No, what is the object, just that is the thought. If the object were one thing and the thought another, then there would be a double state of thought. So the object itself is just thought. Can then thought review thought? No, thought cannot review thought. As the blade of a sword cannot cut itself, so can a thought not see itself. Moreover, vexed and pressed hard on all sides, thought proceeds, without any staying power, like a monkey or like the wind. It ranges far, bodiless, easily changing, agitated by the objects of sense, with the six sense-fields for its sphere, connected with one thing after another. The stability of thought, its one-pointedness, its immobility, its undistraughtness, its one-pointed calm, its nondistraction, that is on the other hand called mindfulness as to thought—Hành giả tu tập đi tìm tâm mình.

Counting one’s breath: Sổ Tức—The method of counting the breath—Phương pháp đếm hơi thở—While meditation, Zen practitioner counts his breath. As you breathe in, count 1 in your mind, and as you breathe out count 1. Breathe in count 2, breathe out count 2. Continue to count through 10, then return to count 1 again. This counting is like a string which attaches your mindfulness to your breath. This exercise is the beginning point in the process of becoming continuously conscious of your breath. Without mindfulness, however, you will quickly lose count. When the count is lost, simply return to count 1 and keep trying until you can keep the count correctly. Once you can truly focus your attention on the counts, you have reached the point at which you can begin to abandon the counting method and begin to concentrate solely on the breath itself. When you are upset or dispersed and find it difficult to practice mindfulness, return to your breath: taking hold of your breath is itself mindfulness. Your breath is the wondrous method of taking hold of your consciousness. One should not lose oneself in mind-dispersion or in one’s surroundings. Learn to practice breathing in order to regain control of body and mind, to practice mindfulness, and to develop concentration and wisdom—Khi thực tập thiền quán, hành giả đếm hơi thở.

However, in Buddhism, mind does not mean just the brain or the intellect; mind also means consciousness or the knowing faculty, that which knows an object, along with all of the mental and emotional feeling states associated with that knowing. Thus, cultivating the mind means practicing the “four great efforts” in the Buddha’s teachings: We try to diminish the unwholesome mental states that have already arisen and to prevent those that have not yet arisen from arising. At the same time, we make effort to strengthen those wholesome mental states that are already developed, and to cultivate and develop the wholesome states that have not yet arisen—Thường thì tâm có nghĩa là tim óc.
